Guide: Verifying Chrome Extension Permissions: Guide

Google has provided Chrome users with an easy way to see exactly which extensions and apps they have installed. In reality, Google Chrome wouldn’t be that much fun to use without the ton of extensions out there. But as with anything good, those extensions and apps can sometimes get nosy and peek where they shouldn’t. The good news is that Google has developed a tool that thoroughly addresses this problem. It may be aimed at developers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it to see what those pesky extensions and apps of yours are doing under the hood of your browser. Extensions and apps you use can be used for malicious purposes, such as stealing your private information or passwords. Even the fact that an extension can access your private information can be dangerous, as you may not want anyone to know the sites you visit. Regardless, if you suspect that a Chrome app or extension is behaving badly, Google’s tool can be very well used to restore your peace of mind (or to confirm those suspicions and the fact that it should be removed). So without further ado, let’s take a look at the Chrome Apps & Extensions Developer Tool.

Developer tool for Chrome apps and extensions

Google itself created the tool, which is aimed at developers. However, it is easy enough to use for everyone, as you will see soon enough. Start by installing the tool from the Chrome Web Store. After you install it, you can run it the same way you would any other Chrome app (my personal favorite is Chrome Remote Desktop, but there are many more great apps available).

Now that the tool is up and run, let’s see what can be done with it. First of all, if you are a developer, you can load the directory you are working on via the Load unpacked button

Now let’s see how this tool can be used to see what extensions and apps are allowed to do. To find the one you want to check out, you can use the tabs at the top of the tool’s window to switch between Chrome apps and extensions, or you can use the search box.

If you’re not sure what you’ve installed, you can always scroll around until you find the one you’re looking for. Either way, once you’ve found the app or extension you’re looking for, there are a number of options available under its name. You can launch it, view it in the Chrome Web Store and delete it. However, the other two options are the ones we’re interested in. Namely Permissions and Behavior.

Click on Permissions and you will see everything the extension or app is allowed to do. You know what to do if you see something you don’t like – click Delete and delete it. For example, this is what I got for Chrome Remote Desktop, mentioned above.

For example, if you’ve noticed that an extension has done something it shouldn’t, you can always click Behavior and see a history of its actions. You can then create up your thoughts on what to do next. You can also clear the behavior history and see what happens from now on.

Conclusion

It’s a good idea to use this tool from time to time. That way you can be sure that no malicious extension is installed in your favorite browser.
