Guide: Notion vs Evernote: Comparison and Review
Evernote was one of the first apps to use the mobile route in the App Store. The company has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in recent years. Increasing prices, limiting the free account to just two devices, then came the controversial decision to look at the customer data. Fortunately, it was reversed after a few days of backlash. Among those incidents, a San Francisco-based startup, Notion emerged as a viable option. With its unique note-taking style, templates and sleek design, it quickly became the go-to choice for those looking for Evernote alternatives. In fact, the recently released ‘import from Evernote’ tool made the switch easy. In this post, we’ll be comparing Evernote to Notion to see if the new kid in town is as good as they say or is it just another ‘Grass is greener on the other side’ situation.
Cross platform availability
Evernote is available on Android, iOS, Apple Watch, Mac and Windows. Each app is a native app designed specifically for a particular platform. Notion is also available on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac. Notion has ported the UI elements from iOS to Android, so it doesn’t feel native at all. You don’t have to worry about accessing your notes on any platform.
App size
Evernote weighs in at around 126MB, while Notion is surprisingly tenth of 12.6MB. Download Evernote for iOS Download Notion for iOS
User environment
Evernote’s many years of experience becomes clear here. The app is smooth and animations are a joy to use. All relevant options are at the bottom. The swipe gesture will take you to the All Notes section. The app is well made. You have to be very picky to find a reason to complain.
As you may know, the app follows the physical closet concept with the organization via Notebooks and Tags. Notion, on the other hand, looks and feels outdated. It still uses the hamburger menu and options like undo and share options are awkwardly at the top. The app doesn’t use the usual bottom bar menus for note taking, which is odd.
taking notes
Note-taking capabilities are the most important aspect of any Notes app. That’s where the differences between the two come up. Evernote has included every possible way to add new notes. You can write notes, add images, capture images, tag files and even draw with the available options.
Evernote also lets you choose from the available templates. The selection is no doubt rich, and I’m sure you will find the relevant template to start the note.
Notion’s approach is different here. It treats every sentence like a block. The benefit of this is that the software can let you customize each block individually, and you can also move those blocks in notes using the drag and drop feature.
The ability to add images, links, files and templates has a unique look. You can add that from a small arrow from any block. From there you can integrate everything. And that’s why Notion was quite popular with veteran users and reviewers.
Desktop app and extension
Both Notion and Evernote have a desktop app available for Windows and Mac. The functionalities suit them mobile counterparts. I found using Notion’s templates a bit sophisticated on desktop apps.
The Evernote extension is available in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and any other Chromium-based browser. Notion recently added extension support for the Chrome browser.
Other functions
Searching through a note is just as essential as taking notes for these apps. And Evernote excels at finding notes. Type in a keyword and it will pull up all relevant information from the Notes stacks. I found Notion’s search a bit clumsy at times.
Other functionalities include support for dark themes and organization via Notebooks. Notion also allows you to add a relevant cover photo to each note, which is a nice touch.
Widget support
Evernote supports a widget feature on iOS. You can add a widget and write notes from the My feed menu. Unfortunately, Notion does not provide a quick way to add new notes.
Parts
Sharing is where Evernote excels. You can add the other person’s Evernote account to quickly send the note. You can also send a simple note through any of the social media. There is no lock-in here.
With Notion you can only send the note to the other Notion member. For those outside of Notion’s world, you need to generate a shareable link and then send a note using that.
Pricing
Evernote offers two types of premium offers. The basic version is limited to 60MB of data and the functionalities are bare as well. The complete-featured set comes in Premium offer which costs $ 70 per year. Notion is free to use for the first 1000 blocks, which should be enough for a regular user. After that, the app costs $ 4 per month.
Worth the transfer rush?
After two weeks of using both software, I have to say Evernote still has it. For a new user, I would suggest going with Notion as the approach is modern and the style of the notes looks better than Evernote. For those thinking of moving from Evernote, I would recommend trying Notion for at least a week. The next up Apple Notes is a capable offering from Apple on iOS. But unfortunately it is not available on other platforms. Microsoft OneNote is a viable option for those looking for an alternative. Read the comparison below for more information.
