Guide: Notability vs Evernote: Comparison and Review

If you’re a college student or interested in a note-taking app for any reason, you’ve probably come across Evernote and Notability. Evernote certainly, as it’s the most obvious all-things recommendation ever. On the other hand, fame is known for getting specific things right. It is only available on Apple devices as a paid app and it saves notes in a proprietary format like Evernote. The big advantage is that you can scribble things on the screen with a stylus or just your finger, while recording audio. If you’re tossing around in your head and not sure which one to choose, then hopefully you’ll have a clearer idea at the end of this page.

The fundamental differences

Cross-platform availability: You can find Evernote apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and most importantly, the web. And Evernote does a commendable job of trying to keep the same functionality between the apps. Notability, on the other hand, is only available for iPhone, iPad and Mac. The money: Evernote is free to use. Notability’s iOS app is $ 4.99 and the Mac app is $ 9.99. Although Evernote has a premium subscription for $ 4.99 per month that makes this possible features such as offline support, which is built into Notability’s app as standard.

Notability synchronizes voice recordings with textual notes

If you are a student you will love Notability. When you create a new note, you will get a large white area for you to draw, scribble, or type on. You can also add images, PDFs and audio recordings and you have the option to mark up. If you are using an external or built-in keyboard for typing, Notability will also map the typed keyboard words against the point in the recording. So you can quickly switch between dictations and start listening to the clip you want. But this functionality only works when you use the keyboard. If you’d rather take notes by scribbling with a stylus, you’re out of luck.

Evernote can also record voice

When you create a new note, you will see a microphone buttonPressing this will start voice recording. Like Notability, you are free to type your notes while the audio is being recorded.

Note Include Notability vs. Evernote

The main difference between the two is that Notability provides an integrated note-taking experience. You have 4-5 different sources – audio, scribbled notes, drawings, typed text, imported images and PDFs – and Notability binds them together into one full contextual bundle. If you do it right, all the things you need to revisit a lecture can be listed in one note.

Evernote, on the other hand, lacks all of these contextual things. Yes, you can have audio and text in one note, but that’s it. If you need to annotate documents in a note, they must be in PDF format and you must be a Premium member. This is it. This is what it all boils down to. If you want the contextual, packaged note-taking experience you have to go with Notability, there’s no other way.

Where Evernote Wins

Notability is focused on creating this unique experience. Evernote is much more than that. Some of the things Evernote can do: You can use it as a task management system, as a storage for old documents, a logger for life or whatever you want. And Evernote has features like the great operator based search to find things easily. If your notes take place outside of classrooms and meetings, Evernote may have a lot more to offer. Fame is also limited to iOS and Mac. This leaves out Android and Windows users, which is a significant population. Evernote is also free to start. But if you’re a heavy user, you’ll soon get past the free usage and want to have your notes available offline. This is when you have to pay $ 5 a month or $ 45 a year for Evernote Premium. Notability on the other hand will cost you a total of $ 15 on iOS and Mac. No upgrades or monthly prices there. Notability uses iCloud to sync between devices, while Evernote uses their own servers. When it comes to exporting content, Evernote and Notability are both quite tied thanks to their own formats. Notability can export the notes separately as PDF and audio. You can also export notes as a Notability file to share with other Notability users.

Evernote’s sharing features are much better. Multiple users can collaborate on the same document. It’s not as good as Google Docs, but it’s still something useful that Notability doesn’t have.

Evernote also has a secret scribble weapon

A few years ago, Evernote bought Penultimate, another handwriting / notes app that allows you to freely draw or write on the iPad screen. Lately, the app has been integrated with the Evernote experience. Penultimate is a free app, but you can unlock it features by paying for Evernote Premium.

A cool one feature is that Evernote scans all your handwritten notes and lets you search through them. And yes, Penultimate is just a handwriting / note taking app with tight Evernote integration. But for some, that may be all you need.

Conclusion

There is so much Evernote can do, people have written books about it. So I cannot go into full detail here. But it’s safe to say that Evernote lets you scan all your handwritten notes / PDFs / images so you can search through them with ease. Notability is quite a focused app. That’s okay. They are the best at what they do. But you need to be aware of the limitations before jumping in.

Which one did you go with?

I’ve tried Notability and I’ll keep trying, but right now I’m an Evernote guy myself. And you? Which one did you ultimately choose? And if you’re not sure, don’t feel bad, we’re all in this together. This comparison covered only two of the leading services, and there are many more available.
