Guide: How to Watch On-Demand Shows on PlayStation Vue
PS Vue is a video streaming service that offers live TV, on-demand videos and premium broadcasters such as Showtime and HBO. The best part is, you don’t actually need a PlayStation to use Vue. The app works on PCs, smartphones and a few other devices. That said, you must have a PlayStation Network account to sign up for Vue. The account is free and easy to set up up. This article is about PS Vue on demand, but we’ll also walk you through the sign up process and other PS Vue requirements.
PS Vue: the application process
Sony has made it really easy to sign up for PS Vue, and you get a free trial even if you select one of the basic packages. Of course, you will be automatically charged if you do not cancel the subscription before the trial period ends. And don’t forget, you need a PS Network account, but you don’t need to create one before proceeding to sign up. Here are the necessary steps.
Step 1
Go to vue.playstation.com and click on “Try 5 days free!” Now you need to type and confirm the zip code by selecting Continue.
Step 2
Select one of the four subscription plans and confirm by clicking “Choose this plan”. You can select additional packages in the next window; just click Add to choose them.
Step 3
If you have a PS Network account, select “Sign Up” and provide the necessary information. Otherwise, enter your email address and then set a password and enter your date of birth to create the account. After that, make sure you have chosen the desired plan and click on ‘Proceed to checkout’. To complete the sign-up process, select ‘I agree, confirm purchase’.
Then you have the option ‘Activate device’ or ‘Watch now’. Select the former to use Vue for streaming gadgets like the Roku or choose the latter to watch videos in the browser. YOU wrap up by clicking “Yes, I am on my home network.” Important note: Choose the wrong location if your home network can lock live TV service. If this happens, you will need to contact PS Vue customer service to resolve the issue.
PS Vue On-Demand and DVR
With this streaming service you get both on-demand videos and a DVR recorder. Vue’s user interface is well-designed and you will have no problem accessing the services. What’s best, you don’t have to pay extra for the DVR. Check out the quick guide On how to take advantage of on-demand and DVR.
Step 1
Log into your account at Vue and select Channels. Choose a channel to see what shows are available, then click the movie or show to watch or record it.
Old shows are available right away (just click Play) and you can set automatic recording of future episodes. Click on the plus sign for this button.
Step 2
To preview and watch the recorded movies and shows, select “My Vue” and click Play button. There are no restrictions on fast forwarding, rewinding or pausing the programs you are recording through the DVR. However, the storage lasts only 28 days. On the other hand, you can’t fast-forward or skip commercials when playing movies and series on demand. There are also restrictions on the recording of certain sporting events.
Are there rental options on PS Vue?
Surprisingly, there are no options to rent movies through PS Vue, at least not directly. Premium channels and an Ultra subscription offer many free movies and TV series and that’s about it.
The lack of its own rental service is a shortcoming of PS Vue. But given the number of titles available, it’s not a deal breaker. And you never know, it can pop up with a future update.
Internet Speed Requirements
Needless to say, PS Vue needs a super fast connection to enjoy smoothly streams. If you want to watch a show on one device, 10 Mbps should be enough. For more shows / devices, add 5 Mbps for each device and 20+ Mbps should meet the needs of a small household. With this in mind, you should know that PS Vue limits the number of connected devices to 5 and this doesn’t change with premium plans. There are also certain limitations in terms of devices you can use. For example, you are allowed to stream on one PS4 and one PS3, which means that you cannot stream on two PS4s at the same time. Cut the limit to three mobile devices and all of this applies to on-demand videos or any other stream you use. The best way to get around the restrictions is to access Vue from different devices.
It’s Vue time
Accessing on-demand videos on PS Vue is easy, and you get free DVR and storage with every subscription. Whatever you choose, it is important to use the correct network location and consider the limitations and requirements. What’s the TV show you can’t live without? Is it available on Vue?
