Guide: How to use Find Big Mail to Search Large Emails in Gmail
There is nothing that is infinite. No, not even Gmail. However, the very generous 7 GB plus storage space might suggest that. I’ve used up about 27% of my allocated space; there is still a lot to do, but I know one day I will touch the edge. Good email management requires proactive action before you see the “you have no more space” message. Find Big Mail is one such Gmail management service that you should try out if you want to make some space in your Gmail account. Even if you’re not near the limit, it helps to create some space as we know that Gmail can be used effectively as an online ‘hard drive’ and cloud storage space. So why waste the gigabytes that are ours for the taking?
Put your Gmail account under the scanner
Find Big Mail is free for all accounts ending in @ gmail.com. Google Apps accounts are covered by plans with different prices. To use Find Big Mail, you need to key in your Gmail account address and grant Find Big Mail access. The web app scans you All email folder (if it doesn’t find it, Inbox will be scanned). Email conversations have a color label. Three sizes are used for labels: sizes larger than 1 MB, 5 MB and 10 MB. FindBigMail.com labels individual email messages, not threads. This means you can choose to delete individual emails or the entire thread. The latter of course helps to release up extra space. As you can see from the table below, emails are categorized based on number and estimated size.
The tool sends you two emails. The first is to let you know that the scan is in progress. You can continue to use your account while the scan is enabled. The second email is a more detailed report showing the three largest emails with labels and also the other emails of different sizes (as shown in the screenshot below). You can click on the links to examine each email one by one before choosing to delete them.
As you can see, it will invariably be a photo attachment or a video attachment. So you can easily download it offline somewhere and delete the original email for free up space.
A note on security
You might be hesitant before giving a third-party service your Gmail ID. Find Big Mail will only connect to your account for the duration of the scan. It does not see your password. The service uses OAuth and receives a token from Google for temporary access. Once the report has been sent, email IDs are not stored on the server. You can also double check from Google’s user account page. So, what do you think of Find Big Mail? Put the Gmail cleanup tool to work and see if you can get a few gigabytes back.
