Guide: How to Use Chrome Sync

Different apps keep your data in sync across devices and platforms when you log into them. The Chrome browser offers a similar possibility with the synchronization featureMost users today have at least 2 devices: a computer or one mobile, or two mobile phonesof two computers. You can sync Chrome data between multiple devices to make your browsing experience consistent. But what exactly does Chrome sync do? Do you need to sync your data with Chrome sync? Regardless of whether you are using Android, iOS, Windows or Mac, Chrome’s sync feature is available on all platforms. All you need to do is sign in with the same Google account in Chrome on all devices. It’s time to embark on our long journey to learn all about Chrome sync. At the end of the post, you will learn what Chrome sync is, what data can be synced in Chrome, how to turn Chrome sync on or off, and more.

What is your Chrome data sync

When you enable sync in Chrome with your Google account, you can sync your Chrome information, such as passwords, history, settings, etc., to the cloud. Now if you sign into Chrome with the same Google account from another device, such as another computer or mobile phone (Android or iOS), your data will also be synced with that device.

If you update data on one of the devices, it will also be changed on other devices. You will see the synced data on all your devices. In case you have your phone or switching to a new device, you don’t need to manually transfer your Chrome data. Just log into the same Google account on Chrome on other devices and you will get your synced data back immediately. For example, add the extension Grammarly or Microsoft Editor on one computer and the same will be displayed up another pc. Likewise, saving a password on one device is synced and filled in automatically on other devices. With Chrome sync, the account you used will be used as your default Google account in Chrome. So you will be automatically signed in to Google sites such as YouTube, Gmail, Keep and other services. If you want to keep Chrome and Google accounts separate, you can change this functionality by turning off Allow Chrome sign-in.

What information does Chrome sync

The following information is synced across all of your devices:

Bookmarks on different devices

With Chrome sync, you get a cross-platform bookmark manager. You can bookmark a site on your mobile, and the same will be available on your computer and vice versa. The bookmarks made from mobile are usually located in the bookmarks> Mobile bookmarks folder.

On mobile, go to Bookmarks from the three-dot icon in Chrome and you’ll find all your synced bookmarks from other devices.

Furthermore, you can password protect your bookmarks with Chrome extensions, add notes to your bookmarks for easier identification, and recover deleted bookmarks. Tip Google has a separate product known as Google Bookmarks. Learn how it differs from Chrome Bookmarks.

Find the browser and search history

Like bookmarks, your browsing and search history in Chrome is synced and accessible on all connected devices. So if you search for cute cat pictures on your computer, you can see the same search as a recent Google app search on mobile and other places. The browsing history of all connected devices is available on all devices under the History option in Chrome.

Note: Clearing browsing history on one device will delete it on all devices.

Access to open tabs

In addition to browsing history, Chrome will sync your currently open tabs across all devices. For example, you can check the open tabs on your Windows 10 PC from your Android phone or iPhone. That makes it effortless to quickly open the same tab on other devices. To view tabs from other devices on a computer, click the Chrome three-dot icon. Hover your mouse over History and you will see tabs from other devices.

Clicking the History option in History or going to chrome: // history / displays up the ‘Tabs from other devices’ option on the left.

On the Chrome mobile apps, tap the three-dot icon and select Recent tabs. You can find the recent tabs from various devices.

Share Pages and Phone Numbers

In the above method, you have to follow several steps to open the same page on another device. To avoid that, Chrome introduced Send to Device feature for devices that have synchronization turned on feature It allows you to share any webpage with your other devices by right-clicking the link or by using Send to Device button in the address bar of the currently open page.

The same feature is useful to select a number on the PC and call it from your Android phoneTo do that, select the number (very important step) and right click on it. Choose Call from. If you cannot make use of this feature, Check out 5 Ways to Fix Send to Device Not Working.

Tip I don’t like Send to devices featureTurn it off.

Sync apps, extensions and themes

Turning on sync in Chrome on PC will automatically install your existing extensions and Chrome apps on another PC. Likewise, your current theme will be shared across devices. Chrome’s sync feature does not work for data in extensions. For example, if you save tabs with Chrome session managers, the extension’s native sync capability must be available to view that data on another device.

Save passwords

Just like a native bookmark manager, you get a password manager in Chrome. When you save a password in Chrome on one device, you don’t have to save or enter it on other devices. It is automatically filled when needed. If the password manager doesn’t work, fix it with some tested fixes. Tip Sometimes you can accidentally remove a password from Chrome. Other information

In addition to the data above, Chrome will sync your addresses, phone numbers, payment methods and preferences in settings.

How to Turn on sync in Chrome Mobile and Desktop

There are two methods to enable sync in Chrome. Let’s take a look at them.

Method 1: with other Google sites or apps

If this is your first time using a Chrome profile, a new computer, or mobile, and you sign in to a Google site from Chrome or a Google app at mobile, that email is used as the default and used for synchronization. However, Google will not automatically turn on sync featureYou need to go to the Chrome settings and you will see Enable sync button at the top for desktop and mobile

Method 2: Enable in Settings

In this method, open Chrome Settings and click Sync and Google services. Click Enable Sync. Add your Google account and you are good to go.

How to Disable Chrome sync and what happens if you stop sync

To turn off sync in Chrome, repeat the steps mentioned in method 2 to turn on sync. That’s go to Settings> Sync and Google services. Click on Disable button

A confirmation window will appear. Click on Disable.

If you notice it correctly, you will see the checkbox marked ‘Clear bookmarks, history, passwords and more’ at the bottom. Checking this box will delete your Chrome data from your device’s local storage, which otherwise wouldn’t be deleted if you just turned off sync. If you turn off sync without checking button, you can still access your bookmarks, history, etc., on the same device as it is stored locally. However, changes made to this data or data added from other devices will not be synchronized with your computer. Also, if you turn off sync, you will be signed out of Google websites.

How to Choose what data to sync with other devices

Fortunately, Google lets you choose the data you want to sync. For example, if you don’t want to sync your passwords, you can turn them off. To do this mobile and desktop, follow these steps: Step 1: Open the Chrome settings and go to Sync and Google services.

Step 2: Go to the Manage sync option.

Step 3: Turn off the switch next to Sync all to enable individual options. Then turn off the switch next to data you don’t want to sync.

Do you need to sync data in Chrome

Syncing Chrome’s data provides a seamless experience by making it natural to switch between multiple devices or to a new device. You don’t have to dig into your data on other devices, just for a simple tab or bookmark. With Chrome sync, it is immediately accessible on different devices. If you’re concerned about Google reading your data, you should use a sync passphrase for Chrome. But don’t forget not to use the sync feature for public computers. Only use it on your devices. If you want to sync the data with more than one account or if you want to share your device with other users, you need to view the profiles feature from Chrome. You can create a guest profile for temporary users. The next up: Resetting Chrome will disable extensions on your computer. Find out if Chrome data is deleted from the link below.
