Turn off Trending searches in Google App for Android
The Google app on Android requires you to dive into the Settings panel to turn off popular searches. Depending on your Android smartphone, the location of certain UI elements may differ from those in the screenshots below. But you have to get the gist. Step 1: Open the Google app menu (tap the three-dot icon at the bottom of the screen or the hamburger icon in the top left corner), then tap Settings.
Step 2: Tap General. On the next screen, turn off the toggle next to Autocomplete with Popular Searches.
Go back and then try performing a search. You will no longer see trending search suggestions. To turn trending searches back on at a later time, just toggle the Autocomplete with trending searches back on from the Settings panel.
Turn off Trending searches in Google App for iOS
As with Android, you can quickly turn off trending searches from the Settings panel of the Google app on iOS. The steps are the same for both the iPhone and iPad. Step 1: Tap the three dots icon in the lower right corner of the screen to open up the Google menu. Then tap Settings.
Step 2: Tap General and turn off the switch next to Autocomplete with popular searches.
Go back. You will no longer see trending search suggestions when you tap the search box. You can of course re-enable the functionality at any time by diving back into the Settings panel.
Incognito mode
If you don’t mind having trending searches, but just want a little bit of peace and quiet, consider using Incognito mode. That is an iOS specific Google app feature that completely removes trending searches for the duration that you use it. Not to mention that you also have the added benefit of not having your data recorded by the Google app. If you’re familiar with using Incognito mode in Chrome, the functionality works the same way in the Google app. Basically, it helps maintain privacy. To switch to Incognito mode, tap your profile icon and then tap Enable Incognito.
However, if you’re using Incognito mode, you won’t receive your usual dose of Discover cards within the Home screen. That happens because the Google app doesn’t link to your Google account to generate a personalized news feed. Either way, you still retain the option to take advantage of core features, such as using Google Lens. And the dark theme in incognito mode looks fantastic too. When you’re done, go back to it Home screen, tap your profile, and then tap Turn off Incognito button
About trending cards
The Google app is also happy to push ‘Trending’ news to your Discover feed. However, these cards cannot be disabled. But unlike popular searches, they are highly personalized so you probably won’t have a problem with them. If you see trending cards on topics you don’t like, you can remove them by telling the Google app to stop showing that kind of content in the future. To do that, tap the three dot icon on the Trending chart and then tap Not interested in.
Do this repeatedly when you see a trending chart on a topic you are not interested in. Ultimately, the Google app learns from your behavior and only shows Trending maps that suit your taste. Tip If you are bombarded with tons of unwanted Trending cards no matter what, consider disabling the Google App Discover feed. However, this also removes other cards. If you want to proceed anyway, start by opening the Google menu. On Android, tap Settings, tap General, then turn off the switch next to Discover. On iOS, tap Discover and turn Discover off.
