The internet is a sea of ever-growing content, mostly articles. Whether through a major news outlet or an independent blog, there is an article on almost anything you want to find. However, there are many things that can end up be uncomfortable going through these articles. Examples include annoying advertisements, inconsistent themes, sans serif fonts et al. The folks at Arc90 created Readability to work around this problem. Readability is a bookmarklet that can be used to turn any web page from a cluttered design into a much simpler, text and graphics display. As a bookmarklet, Readability can be used in any browser that supports it. The features that stand out are the ability to adjust margins and font sizes. I don’t like reading 9 font size on websites, with extra narrow margins. With a 1920 × 1080 screen, it can be quite difficult to fully follow an article formatted this way. With legibility, I can widen the margins so that more text is focused in the center of the screen in a narrower column.
Margins do not necessarily have to be that wide. I am so willful. Margins and page style can be changed to suit your taste. You can get Readability by going to the Readability page. The first step is to adjust the style of readability.
The second step is to get the Readability bookmarklet in your browser. You can simply drag and drop it and select it when you land on a web page you want to read with Readability.
On the Readability page you will find a live update of what an article would look like under your current Readability settings.
For those (like myself) who prefer the simple look of a browser without the bookmarks bar, Firefox and Chrome both have their own Readability plugins. Readability for Firefox installs a button at the bottom right of the Firefox window to enable Readability. Likewise, Readability Redux for Chrome installs one button in Chrome’s navigation bar, just with the readability icon. I think it goes very well with Chrome.
