However, there may be times when you actually want to share a password with someone without revealing all your login details. You can allow people you trust to access some websites, but not others | Shutterstock Depending on how much time you spend on the computer, all of these passwords are added quickly upYou can store hundreds of different passwords. If you are working with someone on a project or maybe on vacation for a few weeks and you want someone to check in your services, it is unrealistic to expose yourself completely. Dashlane has a built-in feature for sharing passwords with friends and family in a way that is super secure and puts you in full control. You can also set up a contact person to automatically gain access in emergency situations. Here is how to do both.
How to Share Passwords
In the Dashlane app for Mac or PC, go to the Sharing Center accessible from the sidebar on the left. Then click Add New at the top.
In the window that appears, you can manually select which passwords to share. Just start typing the name of an account you store in Dashlane, and it looks like you’re making a choice. Note: If you want to share them all, you’d better use the emergency contact featureSee below for details about it how to make that possible.
Below that, type the email address of the person you want to give access to your passwords. Note: The person you want to share the passwords with must have a Dashlane account. It’s free so creating it shouldn’t be too much of a hassle for them.
The next part is important: selecting limited rights or full rights. If you give the person (or people) limited rights to the passwords you choose, they can only use those passwords. If you grant them full permissions, they can edit passwords in Dashlane, share them with other people, grant other people access to the passwords, and even revoke your own. For most purposes, limited rights should suffice here. Only give full rights to someone you really trust.
On the next page you can enter your own name and a personal message and then send the email. The email asks the user on the other end to confirm they want to access the password and Dashlane is launched with the credentials at hand.
How to Grant emergency access to passwords
This feature will automatically give someone access to your Dashlane account after a specified time. When something serious happens – you may even be planning your death and want someone to have access to your information – an emergency comes in very handy.
Select Emergency under Sharing Center in Dashlane. Set up your single emergency contact. Then select an amount of time below anywhere from 24 hours to 60 days. This means that if you do not respond to the person’s request to access your information, they will automatically gain access after the time you specified. You can also select a request to access your information, it will be automatically accessed after the time you specified. You can also select No waiting or Require a response from yourself.
If you click Advanced, you can choose which passwords your emergency contact will have access to. Otherwise, the default setting will just reveal everything.
Send the email on the next page to grant emergency access. This does not give the person a password right away, he can simply request them in the future in case of an emergency. Note: Again, the person with emergency access must have a Dashlane account.
