Guide: How to Restore Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 PC

The default image viewer on Windows 10 devices is the Photos application. Users can install third-party apps from Microsoft Store or desktop programs such as IrfanView, XnView or FastStone Image Viewer to use higher-performing programs richer in features than the standard application. Windows 10 users who have worked on devices with earlier versions of Windows or are still working on those devices may have used Windows Photo Viewer in the past to view images on those devices. Windows Photo Viewer is still available on Windows 10 devices, but the program’s accessibility depends on Windows 10 properly installed.

Activate the Windows Photo Viewer

As I mentioned, computers running Windows 7 and 8 could still access the photo viewer. Only those who had a new installation missed it. Thanks to Edwin, a senior member of TenForum, who retrieved the registry file to get the Photo Viewer back on Windows 10. Download the zipped registry file on your computer and extract it from a folder. Now you just need to run the files as administrator and import the key into Windows. Click YES to confirm that you want to add the registry keys. After doing that, restart Windows Explorer from Task Manager for the changes to take effect.

Open Windows Photo Viewer and set it as default

The next time you want to open an image with the photo viewer, right-click it and choose the option Open with -> Other programs. On the box that pops up up, select the More apps option and you will see Windows Photo Viewer in the list. Now just select it and click OK. If you want to make this the default app, repeat the steps, but this time check the Always use this app to open files option.

When it’s time to move on

You never know when Microsoft could completely remove Windows Photo Viewer. So once you’ve decided it’s time to move on to the New Photos app once and for all, you can set it as the default app from the Windows Settings -> Default app.
