Guide: How to Remove a Google Chrome Account
Google Chrome works best with a Google account. It allows you to activate Chrome sync to sync your browsing data across devices and enjoy seamless access to a range of Google services (Gmail, Docs, Calendar, etc.). But if you no longer plan to use your Google account with Chrome on a particular device, it’s best to remove that account from Chrome and prevent it from syncing (or overwriting) data. Let’s say you signed in to Chrome with your Google account on a shared desktop or mobileAfter you are done browsing, you should delete it to prevent others from accessing your sensitive browsing data such as passwords and bookmarks. Let’s take a look at what to do to delete a Google account from the desktop, Android, and iOS versions of Chrome. Note: It’s best to check out the Chrome sync settings and back up all unsynced data to your Google account before proceeding. Otherwise, you could permanently lose all locally stored browsing data during the deletion process.
Google Chrome – Windows and macOS
On the Windows and macOS versions of Chrome, you can quickly delete a Google account by opening the relevant profile and turning off the Chrome sync feature. Tip Click the profile icon in the top right corner of the Chrome window. You can then switch between profiles via the profile flyout. Step 1: Open the Google Chrome menu and click Settings.
Step 2: Under the You and Google section, click Disable.
Step 3: Check the box next to ‘Erase bookmarks, history, passwords and more from this device’. Then click Disable to delete your Google account and its Chrome profile.
Note: If you don’t check the box ‘Erase bookmarks, history, passwords, and more from this device’, Chrome will continue to keep your profile and browsing data locally, despite deleting your account. Only do this if you want to log out of the browser. As long as you’ve synced your browsing data with the Google account, you can sign in to Chrome on any device to regain access to it. If you were the only Chrome user on the desktop, you may also want to consider resetting the Chrome browser. That should ensure that no browsing data is left locally on the device.
Google Chrome – iOS and iPadOS
Signing out of a Google account in Chrome on iOS and iPadOS will not delete it, even if you choose to clear your browsing data. You (or someone else) can still easily log back in and access your Chrome data. Hence, you have to delete the Google account completely to prevent this from happening. Note: Deleting a Google account from Chrome will also delete it from other Google apps such as Gmail and Google Photos. Step 1: Open the Chrome settings of your iPhone or iPad.
Step 2: Tap the Google account at the top of the Settings screen. and then select the Google account you want to remove.
Note: If you only want to sign out of your Google account, please use the ‘Sign out’ or ‘Sign out and clear data from this device’ options as shown in the Google accounts selection screen. Step 3: Tap the ‘Remove account from this device’ option at the bottom of the Google account screen. Tap Delete to confirm.
That should remove the Google account from Chrome. If you deleted the Google account you were just signed in with, you can start using a different Google account by going to Chrome Settings> Sign in to Chrome.
Google Chrome – Android
Unlike desktop and iOS, deleting a Google account from Chrome on Android can be problematic: Google accounts are deeply integrated with Android at the system level. If you choose to delete the main Google account associated with your Android device, you can also sign out from anywhere, which prevents you from using all Google apps and many essential device-specific services. Deleting Google accounts that you then added to Chrome may not cause any problems. Consult this for a detailed explanation guide about what happens when deleting a Google account from Android. Note: Certain settings may be displayed on your Android device up different from the screenshots shown in step 3 and step 4. Step 1: Open the Chrome settings on your Android device.
Step 2: Tap the Google account at the top of the Settings screen and choose the account you want to remove.
Note: If you only want to sign out of Chrome, use the ‘Sign out and turn off sync’ option in the Google Accounts selection screen. Step 3: Select Google and then choose the Google account you want to remove again.
Step 4: Please take a moment to review your Google account sync settings. Make sure to sync your data for any Google services you may use. After that, tap on the Delete icon. Tap Delete again to confirm.
This will remove the Google account from Chrome, other Google apps and the rest of the Android device.
