Guide: How to Promote Your Music using SoundCloud Groups
SoundCloud is a great platform for sharing music and audio files. However, many people make the mistake of not taking advantage of the tools that SoundCloud offers to promote your music and build an audience. Just like publishing your own website without telling anyone, posting a song to SoundCloud doesn’t automatically get you thousands of hits. This hidden SoundCloud feature can quickly increase your audience | Gil C / Shutterstock.com One of those ways SoundCloud users can promote their music is through SoundCloud Groups. It is one of the lesser known features from SoundCloud, but with groups anyone can offer their music to an audience with the same interests and tastes. It increases your own visibility and lets you discover new uploads from the community at the same time. You can even create your own groups.
Join and submit to a SoundCloud group
Important: First familiarize yourself with the SoundCloud groups that already exist and which you are comfortable with. For example, if you post an Adele cover, you can search SoundCloud for a group called “Adele Covers” and note the number of members. The more members, the more people your music can reach once you submit it.
When you find a group you want to join on the SoundCloud website, click on the group’s name to visit the page.
Click on the spot at the top. Select a song from your profile and choose a file that you have already uploaded and that you want to add to the group. Note: Some groups require a moderator to approve new posts. If so, your file will be submitted for approval before being publicly displayed to group members. Otherwise, it should post immediately. Once you’ve posted your sound file to the group, consider commenting and liking some other posts, so hopefully those people will do the favor.
You can also add songs to a group by visiting your own profile on SoundCloud, scrolling to the file and clicking Add to group below it. But this only works for groups that you are already a member of.
Create your own SoundCloud group
The downside to creating your own SoundCloud group is that you have to start from scratch. You haven’t built an audience yet up, so it won’t do much to promote your music right away. However, if you do manage to recruit members over time, your music may slowly come to the fore. Visit your profile on SoundCloud. As above, scroll to the song you want to add to a new group and click Add to group below the file.
In the dialog box, click Create New Group. On the new page you have to type a group name. Optionally, you can add a short description to tell others the point of the group, a longer description with more details or group rules and a group image.
To automatically approve new messages from others, keep the corresponding check box checked. Finally, click on the large Save Group button to create your SoundCloud group. Your song will be automatically added to the group when it’s live on SoundCloud. Tip You can add files to more than one group, so for the record, feel free to perhaps add your music to your own group, as well as others already populated.
