Empty your recycle bin regularly
When you delete files in Google Drive, they are not deleted forever at first. They are sent to the trash can where they can sit and gather. Over time they add up and unnecessary use up storage. Go to the trash can and permanently delete files you no longer need. Just click on Trash in the sidebar of Google Drive for desktop, select the files you want to delete and click on the trash can icon to delete them for good. Hold down the shift key to select multiple items to delete.
Sort through and delete large files
The best way to be free fast up large amounts of storage space is to delete the largest files concerned up too much space. Google Drive lets you sort by file size so you can see large files first and delete them when you no longer need them.
In the sidebar under Trash, hover over the amount of storage space you are using to see a breakdown between services: Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Click Drive to view all of your files in Drive, starting with the largest. If you can easily delete one of the large files at the top of the list, go for it. Don’t forget to click on Recycle Bin and delete them permanently there too.
You will also notice that when you hover over your storage, Gmail attachments and Google Photos are created up space. Consider opening these services individually and examining if they contain files worth deleting.
Add Dropbox or OneDrive to the mix

Dropbox offers 2 GB (with free options for minor upgrades) and OneDrive offers 5 GB for free. If you’ve done everything you can to free up space and still don’t want to pay for more storage, add one of these additional services to your life. Sure, this means remembering multiple logins and using multiple services, but you’re not paying for the extra storage. Assign certain file types to certain services to make your life easier. For example, if you are drawing up for Dropbox for the extra storage, keep all your videos there and keep all other files in Drive. That way you know where to look for a particular file without searching multiple services. In addition, you can always transfer files between services if needed.
Upgrade your storage
If all else fails, it may be time to face the facts: you have to pay for more storage. Fortunately, Google Drive storage is dirt cheap. Click Upgrade Storage in the sidebar to see your options, but they basically work like subscription packages:
