Guide: How to make your Facebook Feed Better

Our Facebook friends are dear to us, but it’s normal that we don’t have everything in common with everyone. Sometimes you just want to avoid certain Facebook posts without feeling guilty for unfollowing or deleting someone as a friend. While you can’t do that directly through Facebook, you can install some free Google Chrome extensions that work. Learn two tricks for hiding unwanted content on Facebook. Photo: Christopher / Flickr CC The browser extensions work like filters. Just type in words or phrases you don’t want to see and messages with them no longer appear up in your Facebook news feed. If you can no longer hear political views, you can choose to omit “Donald Trump” and “Hillary Clinton”. You might follow a lot of food blogs on Facebook, but you just don’t like shrimp, so you can add “shrimp” to get rid of those posts as well. The extensions are whatever you make them from.

Filters stories with bliss

Blissfully is a free Chrome extension that works exactly as above. This allows you to choose topics to omit from your Facebook News Feed, and those posts will not be displayed up all the way.

The extension only works if you are on Facebook and use Chrome. Once you do that, click on the Blissfully icon in your toolbar. Then just type in words or phrases to remove them, then click Add to blacklist. Keep in mind that you may need to split up phrases to include the entire topic you are trying to block. For example, if you don’t want to see Donald Trump in your news feed, you’d better type “trump” instead of “Donald Trump.” Often times, stories don’t contain a first name, so the topic can still appear. However, this rule is situational.

You can view and edit all blocked topics by clicking View blacklist at the bottom. It also shows how many stories have been removed from your current newsfeed because of your filters. And that’s it. Play with you words and phrasing to achieve your desired filters. Please refresh the page for the changes to take effect.

Manage even more of Facebook with Social Fixer

If you’re energy hungry and want to do more than just filter topics on Facebook, try the free Social Fixer Chrome extension. (It also works with Firefox, Safari, and Opera.) Social Fixer lets you hide posts by subject, just like Blissfully, and lets you do a lot more.

To set up your filters, right-click the Social Fixer icon in the Chrome toolbar and select Options. Then click the Hide Posts tab to enter your topics separated by a line. You can also click Filters to display a list of predefined topics and hide them automatically or group them into separate tabs on Facebook. Examples include election news, sponsored posts, Pokemon Go, and spoilers.

Social Fixer goes much further, however. You can make changes to the user interface, such as giving Facebook its own font, separate parts of it home page, change timestamps to absolute times instead of relative, add a comment navigator to long or popular posts, and much more. All of this is still available through the Social Fixer options. You’ll find the tweaks in the General and User Interface tabs, so check these to see what Social Fixer is capable of. Edit Facebook to you heart’s content and clean up the mess. However, keep in mind that over-editing of pages via Chrome extensions can slow down the Facebook website. Could use it up more memory on your computer.
