Guide: How to Make Presentations Online using Prezi
When trying to convey ideas to an audience, it seems almost natural to give a presentation using one of the more popular presentation programs out there, such as Microsoft Powerpoint. Regardless of the software you use, most use a layout similar to that of Powerpoint. However, you may want to get away from it. If you’re looking for more expressive, artistic software, you should probably give Prezi a try. Prezi is a presentation web app that offers great visuals.
How to Use Prezi
When creating a presentation with Prezi, you can design your presentation from scratch or you can start with one of Prezi’s great looking templates.
After signing up for a free account, select Create a new prezi to begin your journey.
The templates look seriously great, so instead of creating a prezi from scratch, we’ll use the Building Blocks template to create ours.
A prezi is being made up from a collection of frames. In conventional presentation software these are called slides. The first frame usually provides an overview of the presentation and serves as the title page.
There are four different types of frames that can be added. You can add round frames, rectangular frames, stirrup frames, or invisible frames. An invisible frame is essentially a rectangular frame with no border.
Adding text is pretty standard. You have access to a wide variety of fonts and colors. Choose the right combination based on the look you are going for.
You can also insert images, symbols and shapes and YouTube videos. Layouts can be specified and arrows and lines can be drawn. There is also a highlighter featureYou can also add background music and voice overs. PDF and video files can also be inserted, as can PowerPoint files.
Adding a layout sets how you want to arrange text and images in a frame. You can choose not to use a layout, but one of the preset layouts may suit your needs perfectly.
After adding images, you can apply various effects.
To edit photos, select a photo after adding it and click Effects.
You have access to a photo editor with 3 tabs. These are Enhance, Effects and Frames.
Improvement speaks for itself and this one features make it possible to change the quality of an image.
Under Effects you have options such as the well-known sepia filter or filters such as Haas.
Frames adds various photo frame type effects to your images.
Prezi allows you to determine the aspect ratio of your presentation depending on the type of display you want to use on the day of your presentation. You can also enable / disable hot keys.
If you select Customize, you can edit the theme and background color of a prezi.
Prezi has an intuitive approach to setting the order in which your slides are displayed. In Prezi, this sequence is called the path. When editing the path, frames can be connected by lines and repeated based on what you have planned. When editing the path, you can also click the stars corresponding to the frame numbers to give the frames animation effects, such as fading-in.
Note: The standard Prezi account is free. However, you must be connected to the Internet to play the presentation. Your work will also be made public. If you want to have both private presentations and private presentations that you can download for offline use, you should consider one of the paid Prezi plans described in the screenshot below.
Maximize your Prezi experience with these 5 Tips
Ok, so that was a general overview of Prezi, how it works and how to use it. Now we will deal with 4 tips from the Prezi team how to really let your prezis shine.
1. Reduce clutter with invisible frames
We’ve talked about invisible frames before. They can be used to reduce clutter. This type of frame is especially useful for large letters. You can have the media without the constraints of the boundary.
2. 3D wallpapers
3D wallpapers automatically adjust based on how you move, creating a parallax effect. Select Customize then Advanced to add a 3D background.
Then select Edit next to 3D background.
You can add up up to 3 background images. One image will merge into another as you zoom in on your prezi.
Note: Currently only JPG and PNG formats are supported. For best results, images used for 3D backgrounds should be at least 3000 pixels wide. If you zoom in with smaller images, they will appear too grainy.
3. Collaborate with others
You can collaborate with others on a prezi. To do this, first press the share button
You can now add people to your project as editors.
4. Present remotely
Below the Share menu, you can also select the option to share a prezi remotely. Simply select, present remotely.
You will receive a shareable link that you can distribute. Up up to 30 people can view your presentation remotely at any time.
Conclusion
What really sets Prezi apart are the frames, beautiful templates and paths. This combination creates a presentation that resembles an interactive flow chart. Plus, Prezi is a web app, which means you only need a browser and an internet connection to use it. It gives you easy access to a powerful presentation tool.
