Guide: How to Install Chrome browser on Different Drive in Windows 10

My PC has a small hard drive, so I only have one 25 GB of space allocated to the C drive (system drive) and store all my data on other drives. Everything works fine except Chrome. In case you don’t know, there is no option to install Chrome on another disk except the system disk (i.e. the C disk). And even if you move the Chrome application to a different drive, it is data is still stored on the system drive, which easily explains GB’s of space over time. After some research and experimentation, I managed to find a simple method to beat Chrome in its own game. With the help of nodes in Windows, you can trick Chrome into thinking it is still on the system drive, even though the content is on another drive. If you are too Want to move Chrome to another drive, then keep reading, and I’ll show you how to do it.

1. Remove previously installed Chrome

First, you need to delete the contents of a previous Chrome installation and create a destination folder on another disk where you want to install Chrome. Remove Chrome and go to the location below on your PC: C: UsersYour UsernameAppDataLocalGoogleChrome Replace at the above location Your username with your actual username. In my case, it is the Administrator. When you get it, in Google folder, delete it Chrome folder in it. Make sure to check it out Google folder. Afterwards, go to the drive where you want to install Chrome and create a folder where you want to put Chrome. I created a folder called Chrome in D drive.

2. Download and install the Junction app

although junctions are a built-in Windows feature, Windows does not come with an application to create nodes by default. You have a Third-party junction app available on Microsoft’s website here is how to install it.

Make sure you have it in the System 32 folder in Windows. Otherwise, it will not work.

3. Create a junction with the Junction app

Now you must redirect data from the default Chrome destination to the new one. It’s a command line tool, so we’ll have to use the Windows command prompt to make the intersection. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialogue box and type cmd to open the command prompt.

Here you have to enter the command below accordingly. junction.exe “Chrome default location” “Your destination location.” As I said, you have to replace the locations accordingly in the above command and include the quotes (“”) as well. In my case, the actual command looks like this: junction.exe “C: UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalGoogleChrome” “D: Chrome” Hit enter and you’ll see a confirmation that the location has been targeted.

4. Download and install Chrome

Now go to the Chrome website and download and install Chrome as you normally do. The Chrome application will be installed in the default location on the system drive, but it is data folder is created in the new location that you made on another disc.

There is no need to move the Chrome application to the new destination. It is barely 300 MB after installation and will not increase in size over time. However, if you don’t want the Chrome application on the system disk, follow the instructions below.

Note: Moving the Chrome application will make the desktop shortcut unusable. You will have to create a new desktop shortcut from Chrome’s new location.

To remove the intersection.

In the future, if needed, reinstall Chrome in the default location. You must first remove the intersection. Here is how to do it. Remove Chrome, open the command prompt, and then enter the command below. Junction -d “Chrome’s default location where you created the junction.” Fill in the required field accordingly. In my case, it looks like this. junction -d “C: UsersAdministratorAppDataLocalGoogleChrome”

Conclusion

The aboveprocess can be a bit cumbersome, but it will undoubtedly be able to fool Chrome into making it run from another drive. It’s good to know that you can use the above method to move Chrome to another drive instead of installing it from scratch. To do this, instead of deleting the data folder from Chrome, cut it and move it to the new location and then create the intersection. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions.
