Have you ever heard the saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words”? This word was coined a few decades ago when the use of images in marketing materials was becoming more common. Photos are now required in virtually any written material, whether in a newspaper, magazine or online article. This is because humans are primarily visual creatures. And you will no doubt agree with us that a great photo needs a great description to go with it. Captions are used to provide vital information about the image. It addresses readers’ who, where, what, how, and why questions in order to pique their interest in reading the tale in full text.

Method 1: Add an image caption using inline text

Before we start we will have to open up a Google Doc and make sure you have a photo ready. Feel free to use your own personal document if you have one. Otherwise, you can download an exact copy of the file we used in this guide. That way, you can follow the steps accurately. The built-in text wrapping style allows you to type text around the image without breaking it. If you don’t already have an image in your document, go ahead and insert one. Now click on the image to select it. This will bring up the text wrapping options just below it. Select the Inline option from the options. You can start adding your caption below the image. Adjust your caption alignment to suit your image. Or you can set the image and caption to have the same alignment. Alternatively, you can use the ruler to adjust the page width of the legend. Just adjust the left and right ruler slider to accurately align. Congratulations! You’ve just added a caption to an image using inline text.

Method 2: Add an Image Caption Using the Drawing Toolbar

The Drawing Toolbar is a powerful tool in Google Docs. It has a multitude of built-in tools dedicated to adding, editing and deleting different visual objects. Allows you to insert objects in a different window so you don’t mess up up your document when editing them. You can insert images, text boxes, shapes and more using this toolbar. See How to use the Drawing Toolbar to add captions to an image. First, we will have to open a file from Google Docs. If you have one already open, feel free to use it. Don’t worry about moving up your document as changes can be undone easily. Just press CTRL + Z keys on your keyboard to revert unwanted changes. Here is the link to the Google Document used with the image in this article. In the Google Docs window, go to the Insert tab, located in the top menu, just below the document title. Now, select the Drawing option and click New. This will launch the Drawing Toolbar in the middle of your window. On the Drawing Toolbar, insert your image by clicking the Image button button on the extreme right. This will open a new window called Insert Image. Click the Choose an image to upload button button to locate the image file on your computer. Alternatively, if you already have an image in your document like the one we used, you can copy the image and paste it into the Drawing Toolbar. Click on the text box button sitting next to the picture button. Click somewhere below the image to bring up the text box editor and enter your caption. You can resize the text box by dragging any of its corners. Or drag the left and right squares on the sides of the text box to align it to the width of the image. Click the Save and Close button button in the upper right corner once finished. Congratulations! You’ve just added a caption to an image using the Google Docs Drawing Toolbar.

Method 3: Add an image caption using an add-on

Although this method requires installing an add-on, this is sure to surprise you because of the others. features that comes with it. For this tutorial we will be using the Caption Maker add-on. See How to do this. Before proceeding, we will need a Google Docs file with an image. If you already have a document open, feel free to use that as well. However, if you would like to try it out using a sample document, please download a complete copy of the document we use in this guide. From the main menu, click on the Add-ons menu and select the Get Add-ons option. This will launch the Google Workspace Marketplace window. In the Search apps field, type “caption” and press enter. Select the Caption Maker app from the results. You will notice that you have other options to choose from. Click on the Install button button to install the add-on. This will show a pop-upup check box up to confirm the installation. Click on the Continue button button to install. Otherwise, click the Cancel button button if you changed your mind. Once the add-on is installed, go to the Add-ons menu again and hover over Caption Maker. Then select Start. This will open a panel area on the right side of your window. Click on Caption button. You will see a predefined caption inserted just below your image. You can go ahead and type some text to add a caption. Voila!
