Microsoft’s browser vulnerability research team is working on a mode to make the Edge browser more secure and has given it an incredible name: “Super Duper Secure Mode” (via The Record). The mode is currently very experimental, but it can make it harder for attackers to exploit bugs in Microsoft’s browser by disabling certain optimizations. To make the browser “super duper secure”, the mode disables a function of the Edge’s JavaScript engine, which supposedly executes a website’s code faster. Called just-in-time (or JIT) compilation, the technology, while it can help improve performance, is also terribly complex. This makes it easier to enter bugs that could lead to security exploits – Microsoft points to a Mozilla analysis that showed that more than half of Chrome’s actual exploits since 2018 were related to JIT. I can at least confirm this to some extent – I’ve enabled Super Duper Secure mode for myself (if you’re using a trial version of Edge, you can enable mode with a flag) and I haven’t noticed any sites that seem particularly slow. Obviously, each person’s web usage is different, so you might notice a difference if you spend your days on complex web applications. However, the Microsoft team notes that they are trying to make smart mode by turning protection on and off based on a site’s risk or resource strength.

As for the Tesla name, director of vulnerability research Johnathan Norman says it will have to change at some point, in part because it would be difficult to explain how safe something labeled “super safe” is for lawyers. However, if there is a way for Microsoft to achieve this without incurring any additional liability (people may be annoyed if they are the victim of an exploit in Super Duper Secure mode), it would be a welcome whim along with the added protection brought to the browser.
