Searching for programs, files, and websites in Windows 10 is quite distracting. Maybe I’m a bit picky. When I look at the bottom left corner of the screen, I always tend to shift my focus. And then I heard about Immersive Search and how it could help solve this problem. Immersive Search is a hidden one feature that’s been in Windows 10 since the January Spring Creators Update. And it’s easy to miss it like several other hidden ones featuresLet’s take a quick look at what it is, whether it’s worth using and how to enable it.
What is Immersive Search?
Whenever you click the search box on the taskbar (or when you type in the Start menu), you will see a pop-upup show the window up in the lower left corner of the screen. This window offers handy shortcuts to your most used apps and allows you to easily filter searches by an app, a document, a folder, etc. But when you deal with it, your focus shifts and it can be annoying when you’re in the middle of work and want to quickly open a file or program. Immersive Search tries to solve that. Enable the functionality and the same popupup By default, the window opens in the center of the screen. That helps immensely when it comes to looking for things along the way.
Instead of clicking the search bar or opening the Start menu, you can also use the Windows Key + S shortcut to open Immersive Search instead up straight away. This makes the functionality even better when actually used. Aesthetically, there are minimal differences, except for a few things. The search bar is now at the top of the window instead of the bottom. And the whole panel features rounded corners, although you can make them render normally if desired. So whether you just want to improve your workflow or the way Immersive Search looks, you can find the exact steps required to enable the functionality below.
Enable immersive search
Surprisingly, Windows 10 doesn’t provide a direct way to enable Immersive Search. That’s baffling when you consider how long this is useful feature has been out there. But by creating a few registry entries, you can easily manage the feature manually. Don’t worry – as long as you follow the steps below perfectly, don’t worry. Note: The steps below are aimed at PCs with Windows 10 version 1903 or higher. Search for ‘winver’ to find out your Windows 10 version. Step 1: Press the Windows key + R shortcut to open the Run box. Then type regedit in the Open field and click OK to open the Registry Editor.
Step 2: Back upup of the system registry. We don’t bother you. However, it is always a good idea to have a backupup if you accidentally delete an important registry entry.
To back-up click File, then Export. All you need to do is specify a location to store the backupup store. Then proceed to the next step. Step 3: Copy and paste the file path below into the address bar at the top of the Registry Editor window and hit Enter: ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearch
Step 4: Click the folder labeled Search in the left navigation pane. Then right-click on a free area on the right side of the Registry Editor window, point to New and select DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Step 5: Name the newly created registry entry ImmersiveSearch.
Step 6: Double-click the ImmersiveSearch registry entry, enter the value 1 in the Value data field, and click OK.
Step 7: Right-click on the folder labeled Flighting in the navigation pane on the left. Point to New and click Key.
Step 8: Name the newly created folder Overwrite and press Enter.
Step 9: On the right side of the Registry Editor window, create a new DWORD (32-bit) value and name it ImmersiveSearchFull.
Step 10: Double-click the ImmersiveSearchFull registry value. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click OK.
Step 11: Create another DWORD value key (32-bit) and name it CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius. Then double-click the CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius registry value. Enter the value 9 in the Value data field and click OK. Note: If you want square borders in the Immersive Search window, enter the value 0 in the Value Data field.
Step 12: Open the File menu and click Exit to close the Registry Editor.
Click on the search bar (which now appears up as an icon) or use the Windows + S shortcut and you should see the Immersive Search window appear up from now on to the center of the screen. Note: To disable Immersive Search, simply go back to the Registry Editor and insert the value 0 in all three registry values you created in the steps above: ImmersiveSearch, ImmersiveSearchFull and CenterScreenRoundedCornerRadius.
Enable immersive search bar
For those of you who find the immersive search window a bit too big, here’s a cool one tip – you can only show a floating search bar instead up in it’s place.
That expands to the full-fledged immersive search box as soon as you start typing something on it. But it still gives a nice touch. To reduce Immersive Search to a simple search bar, all you have to do is change one of the registry values you created earlier. Start by opening the Registry Editor, copy the path below to the address bar and hit Enter: ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSearchFlightsOverride Open the registry key labeled ImmersiveSearchFull, enter the value 0 and click OK. After that, close the Registry Editor window.
Open Immersive Search and you will see the change immediately.
