Guide: How to Disable File Transfer on TeamViewer

You might be surprised to learn that TeamViewer handles the file transfer scenario quite well. This remote access tool allows you to send files over the internet that would otherwise be a bit impossible to send via email. However, it also means that almost anyone can transfer any file to you. As useful as it is (on most days), this features comes with its own set of problems because you never know what might be in those files. Since ransomware attacks are far too common, you can’t be too careful. So if you regularly use tools like TeamViewer for remote access, the best thing to do is to nip the problem in the bud by disabling file transfers. Yes, you read that right! TeamViewer allows you to block file transfers, as well as the option to disable them. All you need to do is confirm the transfer if you trust the person on the other end and the matter will be handled. And the good thing is that you can turn it on at any time. Cool right? Let’s see how to do it.

How to Block file transfer on TeamViewer

Each variant of TeamViewer comes with five access controls: full access, confirm all, view and show, adjust and deny. As you may have guessed, the default is Full Access. That means that once you accept a meeting invitation, the person on the other end has full access to your computer, including the ability to transfer files. Follow the steps below to change it. Step 1: Open TeamViewer and click Tools> Options. That will open all TeamViewer options, including the global and security settings.

Step 2: Then click Advanced and click Show advanced options button

Select once within the drop-down list with full access. Select Custom Settings from the drop-down list and click Configure.

That will open the Access Control Details page with all available controls. Step 3: Find the third option and select After confirmation or Declined, depending on your preference. The former puts up a confirmation box while someone is transferring a file, while the latter blocks the transfer.

At the same time, you may also want to check out the Run Scripts option. If you don’t want to run scripts and the like on your job, you may want to switch to the After Confirmation. And that’s it. From now on, even for small files and documents, you must confirm the transaction. And when you need to receive a lot of files from a trusted source, disable the above setting on TeamViewer.

Restrict access to documents on PC

Again, the above trick will simply disable or block the transfer. But the person on the other end still has unobstructed access to your computer. If you keep personal documents on your PC and want to prevent them from being viewed through TeamViewer, there are many ways to do this. While some of the methods are quite lengthy, we’ll take it up two short and handy ways to keep your documents hidden. Let’s take a look at them.

1. Zip and hide

7-Zip is one of the most popular third-party apps for compressing files and documents. The best part is that it’s free and doesn’t pack up lots of space on your PC. With 7-Zip you can of course lock your files with a password. Step 1: Separate all your documents into a folder or multiple folders. Now right click on the file and select 7-Zip> Add to archive.

Step 2: Here you will be presented with several options. Select and add the new document path. Now your weapon of choice is the option under Encryption. Enter the password, set the encryption method to AES-256 and click OK.

Do that for the rest of the files and folders you want to restrict access to. Step 3: This will create a compressed file (or files) on the new path. You can now delete the old folders. However, the best option is to pre-order a cloud backupup to make. Now all files or folders have the .7z extension. Although the folders are opened with a double click, you must provide the password to open or extract the files. Neat, right? Download 7-Zip

2. Protect your Word and Excel files with a password

If you are concerned about your Word or Excel documents, the good news is that you can password protect any document. The process is quite simple and you just need to remember the passwords. Step 1: Open the document and go to File> Save As> This PC and select a location on your PC.

Step 2: Now click on the More option under the file type that will open a new window. Then select Tools and click General Options.

Enter the password and press OK. That is it!

In either case, all you need to remember is the password.

Better be safe than sorry

With the advent of technology, it has become very convenient to transfer files and documents from one device to another. Whether it’s a simple email, uploading documents to the cloud or moving them via TeamViewer. But they also bring their own problems and problems. That’s why it’s best to be prepared before anything unfortunate happens. The next up Windows 10 comes with a built-in method to protect your PC from ransomware attacks.
