How to Deep Fake Yourself – Guide
Deepfakes (a portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake”) are synthetic media in which a person in an existing image or video is replaced by an image of another person. While the act of spoofing content is not new, deepfakes are more powerful than machine learning. and artificial intelligence to manipulate or generate visual and audio content with high deceptive potential. The main machine learning methods used to create deepfakes are based on deep learning and include neural network architectures that generate training, such as autoencoders or generative adversarial networks (GANs). Deepfakes have attracted widespread attention for their use in creating child sexual abuse material, celebrity porn videos, revenge porn, fake news, scams, and financial fraud. It has prompted industry and government responses to track and limit its use.
How to Dig deeper into movie and TV scenes and viral GIFs with the Reface app
Install Reface
The app is free to download from the App Store or Google Play. In-app subscriptions, $19.99 per year or $2.99 per week for Pro, can unlock premium features, such as removing ads, uploading your own GIFs for deep spoofing, removing watermarks and unlimited refacing. However, if you don’t mind ads (which play while content is being processed) and time gates (you can create up nine videos or GIFs until the app times you for 30 minutes), you’ll be fine with the free version. Once you install the app, you will find a short splash screen, but you can sign in without starting an account, which is quite refreshing. However, you need to accept the terms and conditions and agree to share your face data with the developer. Tap the checkmarks next to each one, then press “Continue” to continue.
take a selfie
After accepting the terms of use, you will need to accept camera permissions before continuing to take a selfie. Line up your face within the contour superimposed on the front face camera preview and then tap the shutter when it is aligned. After some processing, you will have the opportunity to confirm that you are satisfied with your selfie by tapping the checkmark button. If not, you can resume it by tapping the refresh icon in the upper left corner. You will have the option to add more selfies later. Once your selfie is set, the app will sell you the Pro subscription. Tap the “X” in the top left corner to dismiss or proceed with the subscription in your chosen app.
Select a video for Deep Fake
Reface provides two types of content for reface, each with a few minor differences. At the top of the gallery, you can choose from video compilations from featured actors, actresses, musical artists, models, athletes etc. Tap a selection to start processing your video, or tap your selfie thumbnail to upload or take a different selfie. Here, you can technically upload someone else’s photo, however, please note that this is prohibited by the terms and conditions. Scroll through the videos to the gif collections. You’ll find media brands and franchises like HBO, Game of Thrones, Netflix, Marvel, DC and more, as well as content genres like Billboard artists and rappers and reaction groups. Tap on a selection and you will jump to the selfie selection. If there is more than one face in the gif, specify which face or faces to replace and tap the Reface button button process.
download or Share Your creation
If you are working with a video, you will get a preview of the video after processing is complete. If you’re happy with that, tap the “Save to Gallery” button button to accept media permissions and then download it to your camera to roll. Once the download is complete, you will have the option to share directly to Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger or Instagram, or tap your device’s share menu for more options. If you are working with a gif, tap the download icon and choose “VIDEO” or “GIF” to download the animation in any format. Or you can tap the “Share” button to share via WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram Story or your default messaging app or expand your options via your device’s sharing menu. In my relatively extensive practice with the app, I’ve found the entertainment value of Reface to be immense. Not enough to pull the trigger on a subscription just yet, but enough to predict the app’s support for remixing my usual mix of gif reactions in social messages. While it doesn’t provide the creative freedom of Snapchat, TikTok or Instagram, it’s worth including in your content creation arsenal.
