How to check which apps are using your internet in Windows 11 – Guide
We all noticed that our Internet suddenly started to crawl and became slow. Chances are, one or more applications on your PC are using the bandwidth in the background. Using Task Manager, you can see which applications are connecting on your local network, which can help you know where exactly your bandwidth is going.
Check which application is using the Internet using Task Manager
In Windows 11, Task Manager lets you see details about your currently open apps and system processes. You can view details like CPU, memory, disk, GPU and network usage of all running processes. By checking the network usage for each application, you can see approximately which application is using the Internet on the PC. In addition, you can also use Resource Monitor in Task Manager to check in detail which application is transferring or receiving data over the internet. See below to learn how to use Task Manager to check which application or program is using the Internet in Windows 11. First, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager or alternatively open it by right-clicking Start in the taskbar and selecting Task Manager. In the Task Manager window, if you are in simplicity mode where only some open applications are shown in the window with no other information, click More Details at the bottom of the window to expand the Task Manager to allow it to show more details. Then, if you are not already on the “Processes” tab, click on the Processes tab to access it. From there, you can see the network usage of each open application by looking at the Network column. The network column shows the current network bandwidth (data transfer rate) that each application is using. If an application shows usage of more than 0 Mbps, this indicates that the application is using the network. Optionally, you can click the Network column to sort applications by current network usage, from maximum to minimum. This will make it much easier to identify which applications are using network bandwidth (applications with network usage of more than 0 Mbps). With this stat, you can also find out which application is using a large amount of significant bandwidth, which may be causing your internet speed to slow down.
Check how much bandwidth each application is using through Resource Monitor
To check the network bandwidth that each application is using to send or receive data, you can see the network activity of processes through Resource Monitor, which you can open through Task Manager. In Task Manager, go to the Performance tab. At the bottom of the window, click Open Resource Monitor. In the Resource Monitor window, click the Network tab. Then click Processes with network activity to expand it if it is not already expanded. From here, you can see the network bandwidth usage of each active app by looking at “Send (B/sec)“, “Receive (B / sec)” and “Total (B / sec)“. The Send column tells you how many bytes of data are being sent from your PC per second for each application, while the Receive column tells you how many bytes of data are being received on your PC per second for each application. The Total column is the sum of Send and Receive. Note: If you transfer data between computers on the same network, the transfer will also be reflected in network statistics. This means that even when your PC is not connected to the internet, if you are transferring or receiving data from another computer over the same network, the Task Manager will also show the transfer as the network usage of the application you are using for the transfer. This is because the task manager tracks traffic coming in and going out of your network adapter, which also includes traffic on the local network.
How to check how much data each application used
In Windows 11 settings, there is a place where you can check the data usage of each of your apps for the last 30 days. To view data usage statistics in Windows 11, first press the Win + i keys to open Settings. In the left pane, click Network and Internet. Then, on the right, click Data Usage. Under Usage Statistics, you can see a list of apps with the total data usage over the last 30 days, ranked from the app that used the most data to the least. By looking at data usage statistics, you can see which apps consume the most of your internet data and whether an app has used any data in the last 30 days.
