Guide: How to Check Folder Sizes in Google Drive

The Google Drive web app does not allow you to check folder sizes. Do not believe it? Check it for yourself. You can of course download or sync a folder to your PC or Mac and then check its size. But that’s quite a data-intensive hassle if the folder contains a lot of data, and you’ll end up alone up download it to see a small detail. Fortunately, there are a number of temporary methods to check folder sizes in Google Drive without downloading your data locally. If you are using a Windows PC, you can mount Google Drive as a network drive using an application called RaiDrive. Then simply check the size of a folder. Alternatively, you can use the backupup- use a Google Drive own sync client (on both Windows and macOS) to check the size of a folder without syncing anything, provided you know what you’re doing. Note: Google Drive doesn’t count certain files, such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides documents, against your storage quota. Therefore, RaiDrive and Google Drive Backup & Sync will not display accurate numbers for folders containing such files.

Check Google Drive folder formats – RaiDrive

RaiDrive is a remote file manager for Windows that allows you to add cloud storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive to your computer. Then you can view all files and folders in the service without downloading data to the local storage. Hence, you can use RaiDrive to easily check the size of a folder in Google Drive using File Explorer. However, you must give RaiDrive permission to view, edit, create and delete content in Google Drive. Consider the following method where the backupupGoogle sync client is involved if you don’t like the idea of allowing access to your data. Step 1: Download and install RaiDrive. Download RaiDrive Note: Make sure to download the free version of RaiDrive as it is more than enough for the job. Step 2: Open RaiDrive and then click on the option labeled Add.

Step 3: Select Google Drive under the Storage section, then choose an appropriate drive letter (Google Drive will be displayed up as location in Explorer). You can also add a label other than the default ‘Google Drive’ if you wish. Finally, click on OK.

Step 4: A ‘Sign in with Google’ page will automatically open in your default web browser. Sign in with your Google account credentials or choose a Google account if you were already signed in.

Step 5: Click Allow to give RaiDrive the permissions to access the content in Google Drive.

RaiDrive should then add Google Drive as an external drive location to your computer. Step 6: Open File Explorer and then double-click on the newly added location.

Step 7: Right-click on a folder in Google Drive and select Properties.

You can find the folder size under the General tab of the Properties dialog box. Handy, right?

With RaiDrive, not only can you view folder sizes in Google Drive, but you can also use it to locally copy files from your account and upload data to the cloud. You can also add other Google Drive accounts or supported cloud storage services to RaiDrive and manage them through File Explorer. Note: To remove Google Drive from RaiDrive, open the RaiDrive program, click Disconnect and click Trash. You may want to go to your Google account portal online and remove RaiDrive’s access to Google Drive.

Check Google Drive Folder Formats – Backupup and synchronization

If you don’t want to allow RaiDrive to access your Google account data, or if you’re using a Mac (in which case, RaiDrive isn’t supported), you can use the Google Drive Backup & Sync client instead to check folder sizes. But instead of syncing your data locally and then checking folder sizes using Explorer or Finder, the following steps should show you a method that doesn’t require any downloads – aside from the initial Backup & Sync download. Step 1: Download and install Google Drive Backup & Sync. Download Backupup and synchronization Step 2: During the third step of the installation, make sure that you have Welcome to Backupup and synchronization uncheck the box next to “Sync my drive with this computer”. Click Start to run Google Drive on your PC or Mac without downloading any data. Note: If you don’t want to upload your documents or image to Google Drive, you will need to specify your preferences during the second step of the Welcome to Backup setup.up and synchronization.

Step 3: To check the size of a folder, click the Google Drive icon in the system tray (PC) or menu bar (Mac), then click the More icon (three dots).

Step 4: Click on Preferences.

Step 5: In the preference pane that appears up, go to the Google Drive tab and check the box next to ‘Sync my drive with this computer’. Follow by clicking on the radio button next to ‘Only sync these folders’. You can then view a list of folders (including subfolders) and their relative size in Column View.

After checking that, click Cancel buttonWhen you click OK, Back-up and sync to sync all selected folders locally.

A better way

I have no idea why Google had to make it so difficult to check folder sizes in Google Drive. Considering how long the web app won’t have the functionality, don’t expect it to be available anytime soon. The two methods listed above aren’t perfect, but they should serve you well for now.
