How the Apple built the iPhone 13’s Cinematic Mode – Guide
The Cinema Mode on the iPhone 13 Pro models was especially featured in Apple’s presentation on devices last week. The assessments so far this week have people acknowledging intelligence but questioning its usefulness. I have been testing the feature over the past week and this weekend, I took him to Disneyland to sum up the real world in a way that thousands or even millions of people would in years to come. Cinematic Mode Test
My goal in my tests was to shoot what I could in 1 day (and a little bit of an afternoon at the pool), just like anyone who goes to Disneyland hopes to do. A person holding the camera, no configuration and very little direction. From time to time I would ask a child to look at me. That’s about it. What you see on this roll is as close as possible to what you would experience doing it yourself, which is the main point. There’s not a lot of b-roll, I haven’t re-shot that stuff indefinitely. What you see is what was shot. The only edit I’ve done here is using Cinematic Mode to pick some focus points after the fact, either for effect or because auto detection picked something I didn’t like. I didn’t have to do that much, but I was glad I did it.
What is that
Movie Mode is actually a set of functions that exist in a new section of the camera application. It takes advantage of almost every major iPhone component to do its job. It uses the CPU and GPU, of course, but also Apple’s Neural Engine for machine learning work, accelerometers for tracking and motion, and of course the upgraded wide-angle lens and stabilized sensor. The processing power to do all of this in real-time preview and post-edits and 30 times per second is intense, to say the least. That’s why you see those big leaps in Neural Engine performance and big jumps in GPU on Apple’s A15 chips. It is necessary to take things like that. What’s crazy is that I didn’t really notice any significant impact on battery life, although I played a lot with the mode throughout the day. Once again Apple’s power-per-watt work in evidence. Even while you’re recording, the power is evident as live preview gives you a very accurate view of what you’re about to see. And as you shoot, iPhone uses its accelerometer signals to predict whether you’re moving closer or further away from the subject you’ve caught so it can quickly focus for you. At the same time, you are using the power of the ‘look’. This gaze detection can predict which subject you might want to move to next, and if one person in your scene looks at another or an object in the field, the system can automatically focus on that subject. As Apple already examines the sensor for stabilization – effectively looking ‘beyond the edges’ of its frame – the design team found it could also use this for subject prediction. “A focus puller doesn’t wait for the subject to be fully framed before making the rack, they’re preempting and starting the rack,” observes Manzari, “before the person is even there. And we realized that by operating the full sensor, we can anticipate that movement. And, the moment the person showed up, is already focused on them”. You can see this in one of the later clips in my video above, where my daughter enters the lower left frame already in focus, as if an invisible focus knob is anticipating her entry into the scene and drawing the viewer’s attention – to the new entry in history.
