How Europa Universalis 4 is free on the Epic Store – Guide
Paradoxo’s strategy epic will be released at EGS next week and will be free for seven days – first up, however, is The Escapists. Have you ever thought, “I’d really like to try one of those Paradox grand strategy games, but I don’t want to invest money in it because the whole thing will probably end quickly and badly?” Definitely yes. Then one day, many years ago, I threw caution to the wind and bought Europa Universalis: Rome, determined to scratch that itch. 30 minutes later, while desperately flipping through the phone in a book-size manual, I realized I was right all along. I was way out of my league. The good news for anyone in a similar situation is that you’ll soon have the opportunity to embark on a journey of grand strategy self-discovery without having to spend a dime: The acclaimed Europa Universalis 4, “an engaging, textured simulation that conquers the world. common ground between the average Civilization V player and longtime devotees of grand strategy,” is scheduled to go out for free next week on the Epic Games Store. This is the base game and not one of the many packages listed on Steam, but EU4 will be a new addition to the Epic Store, so we can see some of the supplemental content – and, one would think, more Paradox games – will be like that in the future. Even with no extra content, however, this is a massive and unexpectedly accessible (relatively speaking, at least) strategy experience. Ahead of that, however, is The Escapists, this week’s free game, a also acclaimed independent prison escape simulator. Do it silently (dig a tunnel), do it loud (start a riot), or do something entirely different – it doesn’t matter, as long as you leave. Epic doesn’t support user reviews yet, but it has an overall rating of “very good” out of over 13,000 user reviews on Steam (it’s been on the market since 2015), and that’s pretty solid. This isn’t The Escapists’ first free week at the Epic Store, by the way – it was free in 2019, and its sequel was free in 2020. But if you missed back then, here’s your chance to get caught up.
