Guide: Fix ‘Windows Media Player Add to Library Not Working’ Issue

The latest version of Windows Media Player is 12, which was released in the year and has not received any major updates. That said, Windows Media Player is still compatible with a lot of files, but if an app isn’t getting regular updates, that raises red flags in my diary. Regardless, many users are facing this problem where they cannot add files to the library. It’s worth noting that Windows 10 recommends Groove Music when I try to open a song file, and the Movies & TV app when I try to open a video file. Maybe Microsoft will disapprove it soon. Anyway, let’s see how to fix this problem so that you can add, view and play files in Windows Media Player. Let’s start.

1. How to Add media

You may not follow the steps correctly. While Windows 10 has made it incredibly easy, we’ll share the steps once. The first thing you need to do is add all the songs you want to listen to in Windows Media Player into a folder. Let’s give that Songs folder a name. Open Windows Media Player and click Library button

Select Manage Libraries under Organize and choose Music there. If you are trying to add videos or images, select that option.

Click on Add button here and choose the Songs folder here. Click OK when done.

When I first added the songs, Windows Media Player did not recognize the artist name and other details. Later, it started pulling metadata and other information from the file and possibly the Internet. So if you’ve added a lot of songs, give it a moment to update the database. You can view the progress in real time as names and other data become visible.

2. Media files only

Microsoft recommends that you do not mix file types in the folder that you add to Windows Media Player. This means that if you add songs, the folder should not contain video or Office 365 document files. Only music files in the music folder.

3. Change folder

It is also possible that the folder you are trying to add to Windows Media Player is damaged. I would recommend creating a new folder and transferring all the songs to that new folder before adding it back to Windows Media Player.

4. Update the operating system and reboot

Simply restarting the computer can help solve many problems, but before we do that, let’s see if there is an update waiting to be installed. To check that, open Settings by pressing Windows key + I on your keyboard and select Update & security.

You can find all available updates under the Windows Update tab on the left. If not, click Check for updates button and install any available updates. Restart your computer when you are done and check if you can add files to a library in Windows Media Player.

5. Troubleshoot

Open Settings and look for the ‘troubleshooting’ option and select Troubleshoot settings.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find Windows Store apps. Run the troubleshooting for this and follow the on-screen instructions if there is an error.

6. SFC scan

System File Check looks for damaged files on your computer and replaces them. That command can also fix many other errors. Search for the command prompt in Windows Search and open it in administrator mode. When CMD opens, type the command below and hit Enter. sfc / scannow

7. Restore Database

Several users found that their Windows Media Player database was damaged. Microsoft’s support forums suggest the following steps to restore the database. Note that a damaged database can also be responsible for the following errors: To rebuild the database, close Windows Media Player and press Windows key + R to open the Run prompt and paste the command below before pressing Enter. % userprofile% Local settings Application data Microsoft Media Player

You will delete all files in this folder – only files and not folders. In the screenshot below, you can see that there are two files.

Close everything and restart Windows Media Player. It will automatically rebuild the database, which may take some time, so be patient and have some coffee.

8. Use a different app

Well, I was never a big fan of Windows Media Player. If you are looking for a cool music player I would recommend Winamp which recently rose from the dead. If you need a video player, I recommend trying VLC. Note that both apps can play both music and video files. However, people are more focused on music features while the other is more focused on video. I use both. Download Winamp Download VLC

Let the music play

Windows Media Player is still a solid app. However, there are better options on the market. If you still want to use this app but can’t add songs to the library, one of the above solutions should help you.
