Guide: Fix ‘System Requires SMB2 Error on Windows 10’ Issue

Recently, I tried to connect my newly updated Windows 10 system to a server to access some files. Before I could proceed, I got this strange error that Windows cannot connect to the file share and needs SMB2 or higher for it. No matter how many times I tried to reconnect to the said server or change the access points, it remained unavailable. So I started looking for a solution to this strange Windows 10 connection error. Fortunately, I have found some quick solutions to fix the SMB2 error on my Windows 10 machine, which I will be discussing in this post today. However, before we get into it, let’s understand why this error occurs up in the first place.

What is the SMB2 Error on Windows 10

Server Message Block or SMB, as it is more commonly referred to, is a file sharing protocol that facilitates the read and write operations on network devices. So if you are trying to access a Linux based server or router, it is the SMB protocol that makes it possible. SMB version 1 is the old version of this protocol. Since it is outdated, it is no longer safe, which opens the system to ransomware and other vulnerabilities. And that’s why this version is no longer installed by default when you install the newer versions of Windows 10, such as the Fall Creators Update, Windows 10 January Update, or Windows 10 January Update.

SMBv2 is installed by default on a PC. However, the server you are trying to connect to may still be using the old version of SMB. This may be the reason why you are seeing errors such as’ This share requires the outdated SMB1 protocol ‘,’ An error occurred while reconnecting disk>: to ‘and’ You cannot connect to the file share because it is not is safe ‘. The ideal solution is to check if there is a pending firmware upgrade for the said network device. If not, you can temporarily downgrade the SMB version of your Windows 10 computer to access it.

Again, it would help if you put that in one home environment where you can quickly turn it off once you have finished your work on the server. Note: Please be aware that neither we nor the device manufacturer are responsible for any issues caused by malicious apps.

How to Check the SMB version

Checking the SMB version is a simple task. All you need to do is open Windows PowerShell as an administrator.

To do this, search for PowerShell, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Once the PowerShell window appears, enter the following command. If the result is true, it means that your PC is running SMB2. Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB2Protocol

How to Fix the SMB2 error on Windows 10

Switching on the SMB1 is an easy task. Also keep in mind that this task requires a system restart. Step 1: Go to Control Panel and click on Programs.

Step 2: Click Run Windows features on and off option, which opens a small window.

Scroll down until you see SMB 1.0. Click the Plus icon to expand it, then select SMB 1.0 CFS Client and click OK.

Step 3: Now restart your PC. Once it is back online, you will be able to access the server again. Step 4: Once you have completed all your activities on the server, it is usually good practice to revert to the recommended SMB version by unchecking the box for the SMB 1.0 CFS client option. The same can be achieved with the PowerShell command. For that, open PowerShell and enter the following command, Set-SmbServerConfiguration –EnableSMB2Protocol $ true

Bonus: What is Windows Defender Exploit Guard

Microsoft has introduced a variety of security features over the years, and one of the newest is Windows Defender Exploit Guard, more commonly known as Controlled Folder Access.

As the name suggests, this feature protects the computer against ransomware attacks by blocking file access. So any apps or executable scripts cannot access it unless you give them specific permissions. Also, when an unauthorized app tries to access files and folders that are not intended, Windows Defender will bring this to your attention through the Activity Center. Like all Windows 10 features, this one has a large number of customization options. You can add your own sets of files and folders to the list, along with a list of your trusted apps and tools. Just add the .exe files and you are good to go. Check out the following post for more information.

All Access set up?

Right now, the Windows 10 experience is a long way from what it used to be, especially as Microsoft is introducing a host of useful ones features with every update. Now you can not only specifically control which file a particular program can access, but you can also revert to an old protocol when the situation requires it. That’s your favorite Windows 10 featureHave you tried Focus Assist?
