If so, and only if updating the drivers doesn’t fix the error, click Remove device. That’s because it has been known for quite some time that Alps Pointing Device causes this error, and the Lenovo team knows about this. Maybe that’s why newer models come with Synaptics?
3. Disable Alps Pointing Device Services
Are you using a Lenovo or Sony laptopIf yes then the Alps Pointing Device driver is the culprit as reported by several users. Even if you are using a different make and model, I would recommend this workaround. Press Windows Key + R and type msconfig before pressing Enter to open it.
You search for the Alpen pointing device under the Services tab. If you find Alps SMBus Monitor Service, disable that. To disable the service, disable the service. Restart your computer once to see if the error Set user settings to driver failed has been resolved. Note: You must have administrator rights before you can make changes. If you are using a personal computer, you already have the necessary permissions.
4. Delete the apointe.exe file
Several users have confirmed that deleting the apointe.exe file or even the entire Apoint2k folder helped them fix the error. Again, you need administrator rights to do this. 5. Clean reboot
Windows 10 comes with a range of software, drivers and apps. To complicate matters, we are installing even more apps to personalize the user experience. Sometimes the software is constantly competing for resources, causing conflicts. A clean reboot can help fix the problem. Open MSConfig as you did in the previous step. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services so that only those services installed by the user remain. Now click on Disable all.
You will now start Task Manager by going to the Startup tab or searching for it in the Windows search.
In Task Manager, under the Startup tab, choose each item individually and disable it. You can’t select them all at once for some reason.
When done, return to the System Configuration screen and click OK. Now restart your computer and only the essential apps and services will be loaded. Check if you still get the error Set user settings on driver failed and if not, you know there is a conflict. You must enable MSConfig services one by one until you find the conflicting service or app. Boring but must be done. Tip Here’s how I do it. I select about half the services at once and turn them off before doing a clean boot. If I see the error, the rogue service is in the first half, and if I don’t, the other half is to blame. Continue doing this until you only have one left that you need to permanently disable or find an alternative. In the end, don’t forget to enable services to return your PC to its former glory.
