Guide: Enable Extensions in InPrivate Mode in Edge Browser: Guide

If you are an avid user of Microsoft Edge, you should know the importance of Edge Extensions. Extensions like Pocket and LastPass not only provide a smooth browsing session, they also help you become more productive. Important as they are, extensions are not enabled by default in the Edge browser’s InPrivate mode. Edge’s InPrivate Mode protects us from various tracking tools. Usually websites collect a certain amount of data. This data can be your IP address, location, browser version, etc. In short, it can be anything. And that’s when InPrivate Mode comes to the rescue. It allows you to surf the web freely, without leaving your digital footprint. However, as I mentioned above, extensions don’t work in InPrivate mode, and at times it can be a huge bummer. For example, let’s say you have Pocket enabled and you would like it too when you browse privately. In this post, we’ll show you a simple one today trick which allows you to enable extensions even in InPrivate mode in Microsoft Edge. Important note: Note that the option to enable extensions in Edge’s InPrivate mode is not available on all builds of Windows 10. It is only available on builds after 17074. Step 1: Before we get started, make sure the extensions in question are enabled.

Click the horizontal three-dot menu in the top right corner, scroll down and select Extensions. Enable the desired extensions.

Step 2: Click on the extension to open the detail page. Once inside, check the option to Allow InPrivate Browsing. That is it!

Now all you have to do is open a new InPrivate window and check if the extension is visible next to the address bar. Repeat the steps for the other extensions and you are sorted! Prepare to scroll through InPrivate mode as smoothly as you did in the main window. Note: Make sure to enable an extension only if it is absolutely necessary and you trust the developer. After all, you wouldn’t want them rummaging through your personal information, would you?

Is InPrivate Browsing Really Private?

While the browser (and in some cases the PC) stores a bit of information such as cookies, temporary files and history of the sites you have visited, they are deleted once you close the InPrivate browser. That said, InPrivate browsing isn’t 100% private. It won’t put you under an invisibility cloak (hello, Harry Potter).

Although it is sort of an isolated browsing session, your web behavior and activities can still be monitored. If your PC is somehow affected by spyware or if there is software installed by the administrator to track your movements, your online activities can still be tracked. If you are paranoid about your privacy, one of the most effective ways is using a well-known VPN service.

Bonus Tip: Change the default search engine

Undoubtedly, Microsoft Bing is a great search engine. However, if you were to ask me, it lacks the charm of Google Search, not to mention the smoothness with which Google presents results tailored to your needs. If you share the same thoughts as mine, there is a handy way to switch the default search engine to Google in Edge. All you need to do is follow the next steps. Step 1: Open Edge and type Google.com in the search bar. Step 2: Click the three horizontal dots in the top right corner. Once inside, click on Settings.

Now scroll down and select View advanced settings. Step 3: Scroll further down until you reach the option that says Search the address bar with Bing and click Change search engine.

Step 4: Select Google Search and tap Set as default.

Enjoy the smooth search function of Google from now on. You see, short and simple.
