Guide: Disable OneNote Spell Check: Guide

OneNote is simply fantastic at what it offers. The ability to quickly take notes, shuffle them, and categorize items across multiple notebooks is truly astonishing. But not so much if you are a grammatical Nazi. Make some quick notes and you’re sure to make some typos. Of course, OneNote doesn’t waste time pointing out that you made a mistake. But strangely, those red squiggly lines, which are otherwise so useful, can get annoying really quickly, especially if you just want to focus on taking notes. So if you find a few spelling mistakes at the end of the day, consider turning the spell checker off feature all together. Alternatively, you can also make use of a handy OneNote add-in to disable spell check on specific parts of the text as well.

Turn off spell check

Turning off spell check in both OneNote and the OneNote Windows Store app is pretty easy, but requires slightly different procedures. But once you’ve gone through the steps for whatever version of the application you’re using, you shouldn’t find annoying red squiggles on pre-existing or newer notes.

A note

Step 1: Launch OneNote and click the File tab.

Step 2: On the menu that appears up, click Options.

Step 3: Click the Proofing tab on the side.

Step 4: Under the When correcting spelling in OneNote section, clear the check box next to Check spell as you type.

Then click OK to save your changes. Note: Checking the box next to Hide spelling and grammar errors will produce the same result, but will also hide grammar errors in the process.

OneNote app

Step 1: Click the Ellipsis icon – three dots – in the top right corner of the OneNote window, then select Settings.

Step 2: Click Options in the Settings menu.

Step 3: Scroll down the Options pane and toggle the toggle under Check – Hide Spelling Errors to On.

Click anywhere outside the options window to save your changes. Note: If you enable the Hide spelling errors option, any grammar errors are also hidden. Unfortunately, there are no separate spelling and grammar switches.

Turn off spell check selectively

If you are using OneNote, you can use the Onetastic add-in services and the No Spell Check macro to disable spell checking on specific parts of the text, either before or after taking notes. This allows you to keep OneNote’s spell-checking feature while giving you the ability to use the feature from ruining your concentration during a quick note-taking session. Unfortunately, you cannot use macros in the OneNote Windows Store app. Note: Save your work and exit OneNote before continuing. Step 1: Download and install the Onetastic plug-in. Download Onetastic Make sure to select the 32-bit or 64-bit version of the add-in that matches your OneNote version. Note: To determine your OneNote version, open the File menu, click Account, then About OneNote. Do not forget to close the application afterwards. Step 2: The download consists of an executable file. Just run it and follow the on-screen instructions to install the add-in.

Step 3: Click Start OneNote when prompted.

Step 3: Download the No Spell Check macro. Do not download spell check Step 4: After downloading, run the executable file.

Step 4: The No Spell Check macro should open in the Download Macros window. Click on Install.

Step 5: As soon as you see the blue-colored message Installed no spell check, exit the Download Macros window.

Step 6: To remove the spell check from an existing piece of text, simply highlight it and click on it Home tab.

Alternatively, to prevent the spell check from taking effect when composing a note, place your cursor and then open the Home tab. Step 7: Click Spell Check in the Macros group, then click No Spell Check.

You should see all red squiggles removed immediately. Or if you enabled the macro before creating a new note, you won’t find any typos while typing. Tip The macro is deactivated when creating a new note. You must enable it if you want to prevent the spell checker from detecting errors.

No more distractions

Taking notes simply means putting thoughts into them words as quickly as possible, and that extra second spent correcting a word can be messy up your train of thought. Hence, disabling spell check should help you immensely in that regard. And also, don’t forget to use the Onetastic add-in for cases where you don’t want to completely remove the spell check feature.
