Guide: Changing Background in Google Drawings: Guide

Google Drawings is a relatively lesser known service from the technology giant. It contains almost everything you need to collaborate and create wireframes, flowcharts, concept maps, etc. with your colleagues. Drawings are hosted in Google Drive and give you access to a blank canvas, along with all the essential tools you need to create just about anything. The best thing about using Google Drawings is that it allows multiple users to open and edit drawings in real time at the same time. However, the only possible downside at the moment is that the interface is not that intuitive, especially for new users. That makes simple things like changing the wallpaper a bit confusing, but don’t worry, we’re here to help. Read on to find out how to change the background color in Google Drawings or set an image as the background.

How to Change the background color in Google Drawings

When you open a new project in Google Drawings, the interface greets you with a blank canvas with a transparent background. Now if you want to change the background and add some color to it, you need to follow these simple steps: Step 1: Right click anywhere on the canvas to open up the context menu.

S.point 2: Move the mouse pointer over the Background option in the menu to open up the background settings.

S.point 3: From the following drop-down list you can select a solid color or a gradient for the background.

The solid color tab is selected by default and you can choose any color from the variety of preset options on the tab. If you don’t want to select a preset color, you can also click the Custom option to open up a color wheel. Here you can enter the hex code of the color of your choice or choose it manually by dragging the slider over the color picker. You can also select the transparency of the background. When you are satisfied with the choice, click OK to set the color as the new background.

S.point 4: If you’d rather have a gradient as a background, you can switch to the Gradient tab by clicking on it.

The gradient also offers a variety of different presets and a custom option to help you choose the gradient of your choice. Clicking on the Custom option opens up a bangup window where you can select the gradient type, angle, and shape. You can also add gradient stops if you want to add multiple different gradients on the canvas.

When you’re happy with the selection, click OK and the gradient will be added as a background. Pretty easy so far, right?

After placing the new background, you can select the tool of your choice and start working on your project just like you would with a transparent background.

How to Use an image as a background in Google Drawings

If you have a background image for your project and prefer to use it, you don’t have to do much tinkering. So instead of using a solid color or gradient, you should follow these simple steps: Step 1: Click the Insert option in the toolbar to open up the context menu and move the mouse pointer over the image sub-option to open up the following options.

S.point 2: Choose the location from which you want to upload the background image here.

You are given the option to upload directly from your computer, search for an image on the web, or insert an image from Google Drive or Google Photos. You can also insert an image with a URL or click a new one with your system’s webcam. I chose the first option and uploaded an image directly from our system. That will open up a dialog where you can find and select the image you want to upload. Just click Open to insert the image on the canvas.

After you’ve successfully inserted the image, you will likely need to resize it to fit the canvas. You can do this by moving the cursor to one of the corners and then clicking and dragging to increase or decrease the size.

After resizing, you need to align it with the canvas to get the best possible fit. You can do that by right-clicking the photo and then selecting Horizontal or Vertical from the Center of Page option.

If the aspect ratio of the image is different, you should also crop it to fit the canvas. For that, you need to select the Crop Image option from the context menu, then drag the edges to crop the image and press Enter to crop.

You can now use all tools as usual. Be careful not to accidentally select and move the image. In that case, use the Center on Page setting again to make things right.
