As part of its commitment to the health and well-being of its users, Apple introduced Drop Detection feature with your Apple Watch Series 4. While the Apple Watch can be integrated with your iPhone, Fall Detection feature it doesn’t necessarily depend on your iPhone to sound the alarm if you fall hard. But what is drop detection feature and why is it a deciding factor for users looking for a smartwatch that also keeps them safe? Here’s everything you need to know.
What is Apple Watch drop detection?
As the name suggests, this Apple Watch feature detects when its user has a fall and informs the emergency services and users’ emergency contacts about the accident. Of course, not every small fall justifies emergency services, which is why the Apple Watch asks the user if he’s okay in the event of a fall and waits a minute for him to respond. If the user does not respond within a minute, it will activate its emergency protocols and provide the user with necessary assistance.
How does fall detection work?
The Apple Watch has a built-in accelerometer that, if it detects a high-G-force stop (such as when you’re moving and stops suddenly), and detects a drop while you’re wearing the watch, it will trigger a drop alert. You have one minute to let the watch know it’s okay by pressing the digital crown, tapping Close in the upper left corner, or tapping “I’m okay”. If you are unwell, you can tap the emergency SOS option to request emergency services.
What happens when your Apple Watch detects that you are immobile?
If you do not respond to the watch about the crash, it will automatically alert your emergency contacts and authorities to help you. Along with the display alert, the watch will also provide tactile feedback on your wrist to nudge it and sound an alarm. If it feels movement after the fall, it will wait about a minute for you to respond. If no action is taken in this window, it will consider you immobile and begin a 30-second countdown. During this time, the audible alerts will be louder so that others nearby can hear and help you. During this time, you can press Cancel and interrupt the call to emergency services. If no action is taken, it will automatically call the emergency services. This feature it literally saves a life if you are involved in an accident and become unconscious or otherwise incapacitated.
Does drop detection work without the iPhone?
Drop detection can also work without an iPhone. Since you can enable or disable this feature straight from the Apple Watch, you don’t really need your iPhone for that.
